I can't imagine how disheartening it must be for the actors and crew to go to work each day, toiling to churn out such crap. The reasons for why the kids go there is questionable, and the backstory surrounding the protagonist and his father is absolutely idiotic. I can list a dozen of cheesy and inferior old films with that exact same premise, and they were kind of fun and charming, but I never suspected a relatively acclaimed TV-format like "Masters of Horror" would recycle this ancient horror given. (I noticed that the same production designer is in every one of these.) I can honestly tell you that Cigarette Burns is John Carpenters finest work. There's lots of us out there....lurking. Even Dante's effort this season had some disturbing sexist violence and wandered off to a pointless conclusion. Not only the plot is extremely mundane, but also Ernest Dickerson's direction is pedestrian, the acting performances are weak and the gore-effects are not at all remarkable. The story is pretty boring too. This episode written by the creator of Masters Of Horror Mick Garris isn't that bad at all. The performances are also quite poor, the only true reason not to skip this episode is the great Michael Ironside, who at least gives this thing a little bit of eeriness. Truth be told: I was very disappointed with this episode. Other then that this series blows hard. This is like some badly succeeded summer theater. Okay, so after watching about 10 episodes of this series, most in the new season, I am SOOOOOO tired of seeing blood and guts (i.e., human intestines) being pulled out of a human being and shoved into my face--and the face being chopped off by an animal trap, as in PELTS. The movie is linked to previous pieces like The Second Civil War and Small Soldiers, and the glance at actual US politics is not optimistic. The monster's appearance is a joke. And there in lies why the series works. H aeckel’s Tale (John McNaughton). Why the Low rating ? I attributed it to the learning curve, and figured that season 2 would be a whole lot better. Carpenter has been considered as a "thing of the past" for some time, and he had something to prove, so he tried harder. Also, it looks as if this show is not going to shy away from the nasty stuff, so keep little junior from watching this. As a whole the TV series of wonderful and I hope they continue. Not to put blame squarely on the shoulders of some of these old boys (or indeed the 80's) because where would we be without certain movies from the likes of Argento, Carpenter, Landis, Dante and Barker (Actually Clive, WTF are you doing in there?! It's no accident that almost every episode feels as if it were made in the 1980's. I wonder if they even do "the shake" in the editing room, when they see that the material just "doesn't work". First of all, kudos to Mick Garris for writing the script, then standing back and letting someone else take the reins on this one, especially when that someone is Ernest Dickerson (TALES FROM THE CRYPT PRESENTS: DEMON KNIGHT; BONES). Carpenter is a great director who, even when lending his talents to more colloquial fare (such as "Vampires"), still is able to deliver a satisfying film. And there is some (actually just one, but anyway that's enough for a film of this length) really sexy scenes also, believe it or not. I was very excited when this series premiered in 2005. Although the vampires in this film, apart from the fact that they are living dead, do not feature supernatural qualities - there is no superhuman strength and speed, no fangs or immediate recovery from injuries, they are not beautiful and seductive, and with their appearance and the way they feed they more resemble ghouls than the vampires we are accustomed to - the allergy to garlic and spontaneous combustion in the sunlight do not fit into this picture and irreversibly destroy the credibility of the story.
